Biblioteca Ştiinţifică Medicală (BȘM) a Universităţii de Stat de Medicină şi Farmacie „Nicolae Testemiţanu” din Republica Moldova reprezintă un centru modern de informare şi documentare de profil medical și farmaceutic, cu impact direct asupra calității serviciilor educaționale prestate. Asigurarea informaţională a proceselor de instruire, cercetare, formare şi educare continuă a medicilor şi farmaciştilor este preocuparea constantă a Bibliotecii.
Biblioteca Ştiinţifică Medicală deţine un fond de documente de peste 900 de mii de exemplare (cărţi, reviste, teze de doctor, autoreferate, documente electronice ș.a.) în limbile: română, rusă, engleză, franceză, germană ș.a. Biblioteca dispune de trei săli de lectură cu o capacitate totală de 394 de locuri. Anual, Biblioteca Științifică Medicală înregistrează circa 400 de mii de vizite ale utilizatorilor, efectuează peste 580 de mii de împrumuturi de publicaţii pentru un număr de peste 11 mii de utilizatori unici, printre care: studenţi, rezidenţi, cadre didactice, masteranzi, doctoranzi, secundari clinici, medici, asistenţi medicali şi alte categorii de beneficiari.
Biblioteca Ştiinţifică Medicală oferă acces la o gamă largă de produse informaţionale electronice: baze de date, colecţii de cărţi şi reviste electronice, biblioteci virtuale, ghiduri și protocoale clinice, resurse axate pe medicina bazată pe dovezi ș.a. Pentru a facilita accesul utilizatorilor la informația electronică de profil medical şi farmaceutic, în Bibliotecă funcţionează trei centre de informare INFOMEDICA, dotate cu 70 de computere conectate la Internet, Wi-Fi, echipament tehnic performant: imprimante alb-negru și color, scanere, copiatoare, proiector ș.a.
Biblioteca pune la dispoziţia utilizatorilor săi și propriile produse informaţionale, ce pot fi accesate pe site-ul Bibliotecii Ştiinţifice Medicale - http://library.usmf.md: Catalogul on-line al BȘM, ce oferă acces la resursele informaționale din colecțiile Bibliotecii (http://libuniv.md/);
• Catalogul partajat al Consorţiumului bibliotecilor universitare din Republica Moldova, ce asigură accesul la colecţiile acestora prin intermediul platformei PRIMO - un instrument de regăsire a informaţiei în diverse resurse informaţionale dintr-un singur punct de acces, oricare ar fi formatul sau locaţia (http://primo. libuniv.md/);
• Repozitoriul Instituțional (RI) în domeniul ştiinţelor medicale al USMF „Nicolae Testemiţanu” - o arhivă electronică de publicații, în vederea acumulării, stocării, conservării şi diseminării rezultatelor activității științifice. Dezvoltarea RI urmăreşte scopul susținerii procesului de cercetare la USMF „Nicolae Testemițanu”, promovarea rezultatelor cercetărilor în spaţiul virtual global. În prezent, în RI sunt arhivate 27191 articole, materiale ale conferințelor, materiale video (http://repository.usmf.md/).
• Biblioteca Electronică Didactică (http://library.usmf.md), care oferă utilizatorilor posibilitatea de a consulta şi a descărca gratuit versiunea electronică a manualelor şi a materialelor metodice (în format PDF).
Totodată, accesând site-ul Bibliotecii, utilizatorii pot beneficia şi de alte servicii informaţionale, cum ar fi: întreabă bibliotecarul, expoziţii virtuale, împrumut interbibliotecar internaţional ş.a.
Biblioteca Ştiinţifică Medicală exercită și funcţia de bibliotecă depozitară a Organizaţiei Mondiale a Sănătăţii (OMS), având în structura sa Centrul de Informare şi Documentare al OMS, care are drept scop diseminarea informaţiei privind direcţiile de activitate ale acesteia în rândul specialiştilor din domeniile: medicină, farmacie, sănătate publică.
În cadrul BȘM funcționează Centrul de Informare Europeană (CIE), creat în baza unui Acord de colaborare dintre USMF „Nicolae Testemiţanu” şi Delegaţia Uniunii Europene în Moldova, cu scopul de a promova valorile europene şi de a asigura accesul utilizatorilor la informaţii privind istoricul, instituţiile, valorile, politicile şi programele Uniunii Europene. CIE pune la dispoziţia celor interesaţi diverse publicaţii (cărţi, broşuri, ediţii periodice) şi resurse electronice pe subiecte europene.
Biblioteca Ştiinţifică Medicală deține colecții valoroase de carte rară şi veche. Colecţia ce a aparţinut medicului german Richard Koch cuprinde 2628 de volume de medicină, biologie, fiziologie, istorie ș.a., dintre care 150 de exemplare sunt cărţi deosebit de rare, datate din sec. XVI-XVIII, opere ale adevăratelor somităţi în medicină: Hippocrates, Ibn-Sina, Galenus, Paracelsus, Caelius ş.a. Cele 66 de volume din opera lui Voltaire, editate în timpul vieții autorului, dau o semnificaţie aparte colecţiei. De asemenea, în fondul Bibliotecii se păstrează colecţiile personale de carte veche şi rară ale mai multor personalități notorii: V. Kossakovski, A. Koţovski, A. Molohov, N. Burdilă, D. Gherman, B. Perlin, V. Covaliu, D. Şcerbatiuc.
Totodată, Biblioteca menține relații de parteneriat cu 12 biblioteci medicale din statul Carolina de Nord, SUA, beneficiind de un suport informaţional şi documentar considerabil în domeniul medicinei şi farmaciei. Partenerii americani au donat Bibliotecii mii de cărţi şi reviste medicale în limba engleză, contribuind, astfel, la asigurarea informațională a proceselor de instruire, cercetare şi practică medicală. Graţie acestui parteneriat, utilizatorii Bibliotecii Ştiinţifice Medicale au acces la articole științifice prin transferul electronic de documente, realizat prin intermediul platformei DOCLINE.
Biblioteca Științifică Medicală a USMF „Nicolae Testemițanu” colaborează cu Agenția de Stat pentru Proprietatea Intelectuală a Republicii Moldova, în scopul promovării potențialului ştiinţific al Universității și a rolului proprietății intelectuale în dezvoltarea țării noastre.
Formarea culturii informaţiei utilizatorilor este un obiectiv prioritar în activitatea Bibliotecii Ştiinţifice Medicale. Pregătirea viitorilor specialişti în medicină privind utilizarea eficientă a informaţiei, orientarea în sistemele informaţionale (locale, naţionale, globale), în fluxul informaţional modern se realizează prin predarea cursului Bazele culturii informației, destinat studenţilor anului I.

The Scientific Medical Library of the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova is a modern center for medical and pharmaceutical information and documentation, with a direct impact on the quality of educational services. Its constant mission is to provide informational support for the processes of teaching, research, training, and continuing education of physicians and pharmacists.
The Scientific Medical Library holds a collection of over 900,000 documents, including books, journals, doctoral theses, abstracts, electronic resources, and more, in Romanian, Russian, English, French, German, and other languages. The Library provides three reading rooms with a total capacity of 394 seats. Every year, the Scientific Medical Library records approximately 400,000 user visits, processes more than 580,000 loans of publications, and serves over 11,000 unique users, including students, residents, faculty members, master’s and doctoral candidates, clinical trainees, physicians, nurses, and other categories of beneficiaries.
The Scientific Medical Library provides access to a wide range of electronic information resources, including databases, collections of electronic books and journals, virtual libraries, clinical guidelines and protocols, as well as resources focused on evidence-based medicine. To facilitate user access to medical and pharmaceutical electronic information, the Library hosts three INFOMEDICA information centers, equipped with 70 Internet-connected computers, Wi-Fi, and advanced technical facilities such as black-and-white and color printers, scanners, copiers, projectors, and more.
The library provides users with its own informational products, which can be accessed on the website of the Scientific Medical Library – http://library.usmf.md. The online catalog of the Scientific Medical Library (SML) offers access to the informational resources available in the Library’s collections (http://libuniv.md).
The Catalog of the Consortium of University Libraries of the Republic of Moldova provides access to their collections through the PRIMO platform – a discovery tool that enables information retrieval from various informational resources through a single access point, regardless of format or location (http://primo.libuniv.md/).
The Institutional Repository (IR) of “Nicolae Testemițanu” State University of Medicine and Pharmacy is an electronic archive of publications aimed at collecting, storing, preserving, and disseminating the results of scientific activity. The development of the IR is intended to support the research process at USMF „Nicolae Testemițanu” and to promote research outputs within the global digital space. Presently, the IR hosts 27191 records, including journal articles, conference materials, and video resources (http://repository.usmf.md/).
The Didactic Electronic Library (http://library.usmf.md) provides users the opportunity to consult and download electronic versions of textbooks and methodological materials, available in PDF format.
In addition, by accessing the Library’s website, users can benefit from various informational services, such as “Ask the Librarian,” virtual exhibitions, international interlibrary loan, and others.
The Scientific Medical Library also serves as a depository library of the World Health Organization (WHO). Within its structure, it hosts the WHO Information and Documentation Centre, whose purpose is to disseminate information on the organization’s areas of activity to specialists in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, and public health.
The Scientific Medical Library (SML) hosts the European Information Centre (EIC), established through a Cooperation Agreement between the “Nicolae Testemițanu” State University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the Delegation of the European Union in Moldova. The Centre is dedicated to promoting European values and ensuring access to information on the history, institutions, principles, policies, and programs of the European Union. It makes available to all interested users a diverse collection of publications (books, brochures, periodicals) and electronic resources covering European-related subjects.
The Scientific Medical Library holds a valuable collection of old and rare books. The collection that belonged to the German physician Richard Koch includes 2,628 volumes covering medicine, biology, physiology, history, among them 150 books are exceptionally rare, dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, works by renowned figures in medicine - Hippocrates, Ibn Sina, Galen, Paracelsus, Caelius and others. A distinctive item of the collection is the 66-volume set of Voltaire’s works, published during the French writer’s lifetime. The library preserves personal collections of old and rare books donated by notable personalities: V. Kossakovski, A. Kotzovski, A. Molohov, N. Burdilă, D. Gherman, B. Perlin, V. Covaliu and D. Șcerbatiuc.
The Library maintains partnership relations with 12 medical libraries in the state of North Carolina, USA, benefiting from substantial informational and documentary support in the fields of medicine and pharmacy. The American partners have donated thousands of medical books and journals in English, thereby contributing to the informational support of educational, research, and medical practice processes. Thanks to this partnership, users of the Scientific Medical Library have access to scientific articles through electronic document transfer facilitated by the DOCLINE platform.
The Scientific Medical Library of the Nicolae Testemitanu” State University of Medicine and Pharmacy cooperates with the State Agency on Intellectual Property of the Republic of Moldova, in order to promote the University’s scientific potential, to advance the role of intellectual property in the development of our country.
The development of information literacy among users is a priority objective of the Scientific Medical Library. The preparation of future medical specialists for the efficient use of information, orientation within information systems (local, national, and global), and navigation through the modern information flow is carried out through the course Fundamentals of Information Literacy, delivered to first-year students.
